EPC Dominates Panthers
The victorious ‘Catz celebrate after Friday evenings 16-14 Homecoming win over the Le-Win Panthers in Pearl City.
(PA photo/Craig Lang)
In a classic battle of the unbeatens on Friday night in Pearl City, the EPC Wildcats defense stepped up again and again to limit a very potent Le-Win offense and come away with the narrow two point (16-14) victory. The win gave EPC a Homecoming victory over a team that has handled them since 2007.
The “Catz offense rose to the challenge as QB Tim Vandenburgh found Skylar Paulson with a twenty two yard pass to put EPC on the board first. After a “Catz fumble to open the second quarter, it looked like the Panthers would march the ball into the end zone, but the EPC defense held Le-Win on fourth and two from the two to force the Panthers to turn the ball over on downs.
The Panthers responded in quarter two when Tyler Oakley’s punt return set up a thirteen yard scoring run by Zach Diaz. The extra point kick gave Le-Win a 7-6 lead. A Donny Groezinger field goal after a Panther fumble gave the ‘Catz a 9-7 halftime lead.
EPC quarterback Tim Vandenburgh runs the football to the outside as Le-Win’s O’Shay Smith pursues him. Tim also passed the football eight times, completing five with one going for a first quarter TD to receiver Skylar Paulson.

EPC running back Ben Thomas put the “Catz up to stay in the third quarter when he went into the end zone from sixteen yards out. The extra point kick was good and EPC led 16-7. Le-Win closed the gap on the first play of the final quarter when Diaz again found an opening and raced in for a fifty three yard TD run. The extra point kick made the score EPC 16 and Le-Win 14.
The ‘Catz defense once again rose to the occasion as Cody Kluck stepped in front of a Panther receiver to pick off an Evan Heer pass to seal the victory for EPC.
EPC hosts East Dubuque in Lanark on Friday night while Le-Win will play hosts to the Forreston Cardinals.
Thunder Roll Over Sobos
Despite South Beloit scoring first on a one yard dive by QB Matt Saari, the Thunder responded with three unanswered touchdowns to take control in South Beloit on Friday evening. West Carroll QB Nick Hughes found the end zone twice on runs of two and one yards and hit Seth Gustafson on a twenty nine yard strike to put the Thunder up 18-7, a lead they would not relinquish.
A six yard TD run by Sobo Paul Tackeberry in the third quarter closed the gap to five points (18-13), but that was as close as South Beloit would come. A two yard TD run by the Thunder’s Brandon Sturtevant provided the final scoring in the game. Hughes led the Thunder offense, running the football for seventy yards with teammates Sturtevant and Shaun Magill adding sixty six and sixty five yards respectively. Saari led the Sobo ground game, running the ball sixteen times for sixty five yards. West Carroll travels to Dakota on Friday night to battle the Indians while South Beloit travels to Galena to face the Pirates.
Broncos Crush Missiles
Orangeville scored on their first play from scrimmage and scored at will to take the lopsided thirty-four point win (46-12). The Bronco’s Bryce Brown found Tanner Kleckler on a fifty yard scoring strike to put the Broncos on the scoreboard first. Hunter Asche led the Orangeville ground game, running the football ten times for one hundred thirty yards and TD runs of twenty seven and sixty one yards. Kleckler also ran for a score and teammate Dan Zimmerman caught an eighteen yard scoring pass play.
The Missiles host the Durand Bulldogs for Homecoming on Friday night while the Broncos travel to Stockton to play the Blackhawks.
Mustangs Upset by Erie –Prophetstown
By Bill Popkin
The state-ranked Morrison Mustangs traveled to Erie on September 21 and were treated very rudely by their hosts. After getting out to a comfortable 28-8 lead early in the third period, Morrison (3-2) was shocked by the Panthers (3-2) as they scored the final 21 points of the game to come away with a stunning 29-28 victory.
Danny Willis from Morrison scored first in the game with a 35 yard run at the 9:18 mark. The conversion was good, and the Mustangs took a quick 8-0 lead. Zack Innskeep of Erie ran it in from 2 yards out, and the ballgame was tied at 8 all with the 2 extra points.
In second period action, Matt Willkens went in from the 2 yard line, but the extra point try failed. Alexander Volckmann also scored on a 3 yard scamper with 4:48 left in the period, but this extra point try also was no good. These would prove to be crucial in the outcome of the contest. At halftime Morrison led 20-8.
In the third stanza, Wilkens again found the end zone on a run from the 6 yard line at the 8:53 mark. With the 2 point conversion, the Mustangs were ahead 28-8. Morrison was in control at this point, and no one had any idea of what was to come. Innsleep tallied later for E-P on a 1 yard plunge. The 2 point conversion failed. Kyle Coleman of the Panthers picked up a fumble and rambled in from 20 yards out. With the 2 point try good, the Mustang lead was now cut to only 28-22.
In the final portion of the contest Innsleep capped off a 38 yard 8 play drive and went in from the 2 yard line with only 23 second left in the ballgame. The scoreboard now read 28-28. McCulloch of the Panthers kicked the crucial extra point to give E-P the upset 29-28.
In the preliminary game Morrison won 30-6. This week Morrison plays host to Amboy (5-0).

Sports Article Correction
In last week’s (9/22) sports article on the EPC vs. Galena football game, the extra point kicker was incorrectly listed as Skylar Paulson when in fact the kicker for the extra point was Donny Groezinger. The Prairie Advocate apologizes for the error and any inconvenience it may have caused.

Honor Teams
1962 Savanna High School Wrestling Team
As a team, Savanna made the best showing in the history of Savanna wrestling. They placed second at the Rockford Invitational, first in the Illowa Conference meet, second in the IHSA District, second in the IHSA Sectional and third at the IHSA State Tournament. The state tournament was held at Arlington Heights and at that time the tourney was a single class system. Savanna’s twelve boys came from a school of 375 students and the first place winner, Reavis High School had an enrollment of 5,000 students, larger than the City of Savanna. The team was coached by Bob Lueders, now deceased. Wrestling champions included: Dick Ernst, 31-2 and 2nd in state; Jerry Ferris (deceased), 30-1-2 and 3rd in state; Dave Seward, 28-1 and 1st in state; Gary Shaw, 22-7-1 and 5th in state; Gary Grundall, 26-5. Other members of the team were Jim Schneider, Bill Shearrow, Neal Dauphin, Martin Altensey, Bill Myers, Jim Brown and Dick Lawrence. Cheerleaders were: Candy Brodbeck Edgerley, Brenda Vacek James, Kathy Hart Fossett and Diane Mills (deceased).
1967-1968 Lanark Fighting Beavers
The 1967 and 1968 Lanark Fighting Beavers are elected as a 2012 honor team for their stellar record and dominating style of play over those two seasons. The Beavers won the Northwestern Illinois football conference during this time and were at the top of the class. They compiled an overall record of 17-1, while outscoring their opponents 576-72. The Beavers put together a string of seventeen consecutive wins dating back to the 1966 season. Eleven of that game their opponents were shut out. The success of these two teams created an excitement and energy in the school of 260 and community of 1500 and often brought over 2000 spectators to see them play. Coach Wallace “Wally” Isham led the Beavers. Coach Isham was a quiet, unassuming young man from central Kentucky with a pronounced southern drawl. He coached Lanark from 1965-1974. The 1967 team went undefeated, which was the first time in 22 years. The team outscored their rivals 273-6. They had an explosive run oriented offense and a rigid, near unbreakable defense. The only touchdown allowed was on the first play of the game against a rival Stockton team that occurred in the championship game, which Lanark won 14-6. With many of the same players as the 1967 team, the 1968 team played the same style of aggressive traditional football and had near the same success. They ended the season 8-1, again winning the conference title. The key win was a 14-13 win over a then undefeated Dakota team. Their offense was dominating during the season and averaged 34 points a game. While the 1967 and 1968 beavers did not have the opportunity for post season play in that era without the playoff system that exists today, many in the area would argue they were amongst the best teams in not only Northwest Illinois, but also likely in the state.
