Schools in the pioneer time were an iffy proposition. You read about the log ones, those held in the homes or meeting house with a single teacher, sixteen years old. There was no place to go but up. But that didn’t happen for twenty-thirty years, not as fast as you might suppose. Not until the 1850’s did the situation begin to improve. People were busy taming the frontier, building railroads, enlarging cities. With determination and perseverance of some, schools went forward.

Helga H. Wallette

Helga H. Wallette, age 79 of Moline, Illinois formerly of Savanna, Illinois, died on Wednesday, September 21, 2011 at Genesis Medical Center Illini Campus, Silvis, Illinois. Cremation rites will be accorded. A graveside service will be held at 3:00 p.m., Friday, September 30, 2011 at the Savanna Township Cemetery, Savanna.

Ralph Dale Irwin

Ralph Dale Irwin, age 79, of Fennimore, Wisconsin formerly of Hanover, Illinois, died unexpectedly on Thursday Sept. 22, 2011 at his residence in Fennimore. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Tuesday Sept. 27, 2011 at the Hanover United Presbyterian Church in Hanover. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery in Hanover, IL with Military Honors by the Hanover VFW Post # 5300. Friends may call from 9:00 A.M. until time of service at the church on Tuesday morning. The Larson Family Funeral Home of Fennimore, WI and the Law Jones Funeral Home of Hanover is assisting the family.

Victor E. Dauphin III

Victor E. Dauphin III, age 67 of Savanna, Illinois, died on Sunday, September 25, 2011 at the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House in Davenport, Iowa. A funeral service will be held at 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, September 28, 2011 at the Law-Jones Funeral Home, Savanna. Cremation rites will be accorded following the service and burial of his cremated remains will take place in the Savanna Township Cemetery at a later date. A visitation will be held from 4:00 – 7:00, prior the service at the funeral home. A memorial fund has been established in Vic’s memory.

Sandra Mae Wilkinson

Sandra Mae Wilkinson, age 74, of Mt. Carroll, Illinois died Saturday, September 24, 2011 at FHN Hospital, Freeport, Illinois. A funeral service will be held 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 28, 2011 at the Frank-Law-Jones Funeral Home, Mt. Carroll with Pastor Teri Lafferty of the Mt. Carroll United Methodist Church officiating. Visitation will be held from 3:00 - 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, prior to the service at the funeral home. Following cremation, burial of ashes will take place in the Schapville Zion Cemetery in a private, family service.
