Panther Dominate ‘Catz

The Le-Win defense and offense was dominating in Friday night in Lena as the Panthers scored early and often to take the 49-6 victory. Le-Win scored on their first three possessions to take control of the contest early and they didn’t let up.

After kicking off to EPC to open the game, the Panther defense forced a three and out. The ensuing punt was taken on the Le-Win forty-three yard line. On the first play from scrimmage, Panther running back Quinn Haas broke through the right side of the line and took it to the house to put Le-Win up six to nothing. The extra point kick made it seven nothing. Another three and out for the ‘Catz forced a punt and the Panther’s Tevin Sellers took the handoff going sixty four yards for the score. The extra point kick made it Le-Win fourteen and EPC zero. The Panther defense again prevented EPC from gaining any ground and another punt gave the ball back to Le-Win. QB Dylan Gahm promptly found Sellers open for a forty yard scoring strike. The extra point put Le-Win up by three scores.

A little life was breathed back into the ‘Catz as Pat Harrington took the kick off ninety-one yards to put EPC on the scoreboard. The Panthers kept the offense and defense coming as they put fourteen unanswered second quarter points on the board and added another two scores in the third quarter.

The Panther offense was led by Sellers who would end the game with two hundred and six yards on seven carries. Haas added ninety-nine yards on four carries. The Panther offense generated nearly five hundred yards of offense while their defense held the “Catz in check with only ninety-seven yards.

Cody Polizzi led the EPC ground game, carrying the football five time for thirty eight yards with teammate Mikki Stichter adding thirty one yards on eleven carries. EPC travels to East Dubuque on Friday to take on the Warriors while Le-Win takes on the Cardinals in Forreston.

Broncos Ground Missiles

Orangeville had their ground game rolling on Friday night in Milledgeville as they rolled to the 33-12 victory. The Broncos found the end zone first as Brady Pickett ran the ball in from ninety yards away. Daniel Zimmerman would put the Broncos up by fourteen with a one yard run.

A four yard score by Milledgeville’s Daniel Walker would cut the Orangeville lead to fourteen to six. The Broncos added another score before the half to make the score Orangeville twenty-one and Milledgeville six at the intermission. A twelve-yard touchdown run by Tanner Kleckler in the third put the Broncos up by twenty-one and they added another scoring run by Justin Keister. The Missiles found the end zone once more in the final quarter as QB Kameron DawTyne hit Jordan Harris for a twenty-two yard scoring strike to make the final margin of victory for Orangeville.

Kleckler led the Bronco offense with ninety-two yards on four carries. Walker led the way for the Missiles, gaining fifty-three yards on fifteen touches. Milledgeville’s defense was sparked by Kyle Imel’s twelve tackles. Milledgeville travels to Durand on Friday night to face the Bulldogs while the Broncos host the undefeated Stockton Blackhawks.

Sobos Crush Thunder

Despite a close start to the game, with the Thunder even taking a brief lead, South Beloit got their offense rolling and cruised to the 57-20 victory. South Beloit found the end zone first with Ulysses Sarabia scoring from thirty yards out.

West Carroll countered with Joey Sullivan scoring from 1 yard out to knot the score at seven apiece. A one yard run by the Thunder’s Nick Hughes put the Thunder on top but the Sobos exploded with three scores from Sarabia, Josh Draper and Nate Windsor. South Beloit would find the end zone three more times in the third quarter also adding a safety to put South Beloit ahead to stay.

An eight-yard touchdown run by the Thunder’s Marcus Klein would account for the remainder of the Thunder’s points. Klein topped the West Carroll offense, gaining one hundred sixty eight yards on twenty six carries.

Tanner Henthorn led the Sobo offense with one hundred seventy four yards on eleven carries while teammate Josh Draper added one hundred sixty yards on a dozen touches. West Carroll will host the Dakota Indians on Friday night while South Beloit will host the Galena Pirates.

Morrison Knocks Rams From Unbeaten Ranks

The Morrison Mustangs hosted the Port Byron/Riverdale Rams on Friday night at the MHS homecoming and were less than hospitable hosts, taking the lopsided 33-7 win. Rowdy Lathrop got the scoring started for the Mustang’s as he found the end zone from a yard out to give Morrison the lead. Andy Schaver would score the next points for Morrison as he found pay dirt from three yards out in the second quarter to put the Mustangs up thirteen to nothing.

The Mustang’s Zach Leyerla took an ensuing Ram punt eighty-four yards to the house and the successful two point conversion put Morrison up twenty-one to nothing. Morrison would add a dozen more second half points as they mixed up their offense with a fairly equal measure of running and passing to take control of the game.

The Mustangs offense would generate one hundred fifty four yards on the ground and one hundred fifty six yards through the air to make a perfectly balanced offensive attack. The Morrison defense held the Rams to negative two yards passing and Riverdale was held to just eighty six yards on the ground.

Next up for the Mustangs is a road game in Kewanee as they meet the also four and one Boilermakers. The Rams will host the Sterling Newman Comets.

WCMS 7th Grade Volleyball Has Busy Week

The 7th grade volleyball team from West Carroll had a busy week from September 12 to September 15. The Green team played at home on Monday against Galena winning the match in two. Scores for the games were 25-15 and 25-17. Leading servers in the games were Alissa Miner, Olivia Burton, Makenzie Klein, Hayley Ballard and Keara Hayden. “When our serving is on, we can play very well,” commented Coach Kari Baisden. “Our serving was very good against Galena on Monday.” The young players had a very different experience on Wednesday, however. Both 7th grade teams traveled to Sterling to face the teams from Challand. As a combined team, the 7th grade played two matches, each made up of a combination of players from the Green and Black teams. The first match began very slowly with the West Carroll team scoring only nine points to Challand’s twenty five. “We were very slow starting, both in serving and in defense,” said Baisden. “Being on field trips during the day didn’t help their energy level.” The team rebounded in the second game of the match and gave Challand a run led by Hayley Ballard who served for eleven points in the game. The final score was 20-25 giving Challand the match. The second match of the night was more evenly matched in both play and serving. The Thunder lost the match in two by scores of 17-25 and 15-25. “This was a match that featured many of the substitutes from both teams along with some other players in new positions, and they did a very nice job against the Challand team. “I am glad they got to get in this playing time,” said Coach Baisden. Leading servers in the second match were Alissa Miner, Taylor Sipe and Olivia Brinkmeier. Following the losses on Wednesday, the Black team had games again on Thursday, September 15. They faced a formidable Pearl City team at home and lost the match in two close games. The scores were 23-25 and 21-25. “I think the long week just took a toll on our girl,” commented Coach Baisden. “They weren’t talking and moving on the court as well as I know they can. Hopefully, we’ll bounce back in our next matches.” Top servers against Pearl City were Olivia Brinkmeier, Taylor Sipe, Hayley Guilinger and Emily Suiter. West Carroll will see Challand again on the 27th with all the girls playing as a combined team.

WCMS 8th Grade Volleyball News

On September 12th, the 8th grade volleyball team hosted Galena. They lost the match in two sets 20-25 and 18-25. They really gave it a go but just couldn’t keep up. Major serving scores went to Anna Badtke, Kaylee Plattenberger and Breanna Kampmeier. On September 14th the Thunder squad hosted Challand Junior High. The girls beat the blue team in two sets, 25-15 and 25-13. They lost to the gold team in two sets, 25-10 and 25-15. Major serving scores went to Breanna Kampmeier, Jessica Armstrong, Kaylee Plattenberger, Katelyn Morrow, Allison Brunner, Bailey Johnson and Allison Whitehead. The 8th grade team hosted Pearl City on September 15th and lost to them in two sets, 17-25 and 17-25. Serving scores went to the whole team in a grand effort to win the match.

WCMS 7th Grade Volleyball Update

The 7th grade teams have again had a busy week. On Tuesday, September 20, the Green team played against Fulton Unity at home. The Thunder won the match in two games with scores of 25-18 and 25-20. The Thunder were led by servers Josi Anderson, Hayley Ballard, Makenzie Klein and Olivia Burton. On Wednesday, both West Carroll 7th grade teams played matches against Stillman Valley at home. The Black team faced a formidable “A” team for Stillman and lost the match with scores of 15-25 and 18-25. “They had some tall girls who were good hitters and just proved to be too much for us,” commented Coach Kari Baisden. “We have only seen one other team (Challand) that had girls that hit that hard.” Leading servers in the game were Hayley Guilinger, Olivia Brinkmeier, Taylor Sipe and Emily Suiter. The Green team faced the second Stillman Valley team of the evening and defeated the Cardinals 25-11 and 27-25. “The second game came down to the wire, but our girls stayed focused and pulled it out,” said Baisden. Leading servers in the game were Alissa Miner, Josi Anderson, Makenzie Klein and Alyssa Smith. “I am very proud of our servers-they have been working hard to be more consistent, and they really pulled through in these games.” Following the Stillman Valley game, several of the 7th grade players from both teams played an exhibition match with the West Carroll 6th grade team coached by Deana Aljets. “This was a great opportunity for the 7th graders to get a little extra game time and for everyone to see the up and coming talent. The 6th grade team played three great games winning two against their older teammates. They will be a great addition to West Carroll sports next year. Thanks to Deana Aljets for taking on the job of volunteer coach for the younger girls,” said Coach Baisden. “She is doing a fantastic job as are her fellow parent volunteers.”
