West Carroll Names Interim Volleyball Coach

Craig Cross has been employed as interim varsity volleyball coach for the West Carroll High School Thunder. He replaces former head coach John Kavaka who resigned on September 16th due to health concerns. Cross's employment will be acted upon at the October 15th West Carroll School Board meeting.

Cross brings thirty-five years of experience as an educator and over twelve years as a high school volleyball coach. His experience will be valuable to the team during the transition of coaches. West Carroll F/S coach Amber Findlay will be an important asset in this transition as she will help coach Cross learn the program specifics and strengths of the players.

Cougars Beat Wildcats

LANARK ­ The Eastland Cougars made easy work of the River Ridge netters on Thursday in Lanark, winning in two 25-14 and 25-18. The Cougars improve their season record to 16-2 overall, 5-1 in the NUIC West.

Kerby Kniss served for 14 points and had five digs, Katelyn Hasken served ten points and eight kills, Megan Bunyer had nine kills, Courtney Blair added five blocks and Hope Linker set up seventeen assists.

Orangeville Rolls Over Missiles

The Missiles started well but couldn't keep the momentum going as Orangeville loses game one but wins the next two, 13-25, 27-25 and 25-20. Andrea Herin had 22 assists, Briana Herin a team high seventeen digs, Keali Engelkens had eight kills, ten digs and six blocks. Alexis DawTyne added sixteen digs and Taylor Kent had three aces and five kills.

Prophetstown Takes Two From Morrison

Despite losing game one to Morrison, the Prophets rallied back to take the next two, 19-25, 25-18 and 25-17. Ida Koehler had 27 assists for the Prophets, while Kelsie Stafford added 11 kills and Desi Adams had 13 kills and 3 blocks to lead Prophetstown in this Three Rivers conference win.

Marcos Make It Look Easy Against The Thunder

SAVANNA ­ The Polo Marcos wasted little time making Friday evenings game in Savanna look like a one sided affair. Polo scored two first quarter touchdowns and added one in the second and one in the fourth to take the 28-7 victory against the host Thunder.

The Marcos got on the board first as Dagin Buck ran 30 yards for the first Polo score. Brandon Wiggins added a 70 yard scamper to make it 14-0 after one. Drew Cheatham ran a punt back 71 yards in the second before the Thunder got on the board. Quarterback Ethan Baisden found Jordan Speer with a 5 yard pass to make the halftime score 21-7.

The Marcos closed out the scoring in the fourth when Cheatham found Buck with a 17 yard scoring strike to make the final score 28-7. Wiggins led Polo with 110 yards rushing while Buck added 93 and Cheatham had 31.

The Thunder were led by David Walters 43 yards Ethan Baisden was 12-25 for 88 yards passing while Polo's Cheatham completed 3 of 5 passes for thirty yards. Next up for the 2-3 (2-2) Thunder are the South Beloit Sobos next Friday night in Savanna.

Battle Of Unbeatens In Dakota

The top ranked Dakota Indians played like a number one team in Dakota Friday night, handing the EPC Wildcats their first loss of the season 29-7. Although the score was close at halftime, the Indians put the only points on the board in the second half to take the victory.

Dakota opened the scoring in the first quarter with Austin Oberbrunner running for an 11 yard score. EPC's Kevin Glastetter got the Wildcat fans in the game with and 85 yard second quarter punt return for a score. Dakota's Evan Dornink would answer that with a 57 yard scoring run to make the score 14-7 at the half.

The Indians added another TD on Oberbrunners 17 yard third quarter run and Dornink closed out the scoring with a 1 yard fourth quarter score. Dornink led all rushers with 159 yards and two scores.

EPC Alex Maurer led all EPC rushers with 136 yards on 25 carries. The Wildcats look to get back on track next Saturday when they take on the Walther Lutheran squad on the road. Game time is set for 1:30 p.m.

Pirates Hand Missiles Fourth Loss

Galena put all of their thirty three points on the board in the second and third quarter while holding Milledgeville to six in the first quarter and eight in the fourth to take the 33-14 win. The loss dropped the Missiles to 1-4 on the year.

Milledgeville went up 6-0 in the first on a Carrigan Hunter 53 yard scoring run. Keegan Neubauer scored the final points for Milledgeville on a six yard run in the fourth. Hunter led the Missiles with 164 on 23 carries while Harris carried the ball 17 times for 140.

The victory improved the Pirates record to 2-3 on the season. The Missiles travel to East Dubuque next Friday night to take on the Warriors.

Morrison Wins In A Rout

The Morrison Mustangs improved their record to 5-0 with an impressive 64-0 thrashing of the River Valley Falcons in Varna. Morrison put points on the board in every quarter while their defense held River Valley scoreless.

The victory sets up a matchup of unbeatens next Friday night as the Mustangs travel to Amboy to take on the 5-0 Clippers. Morrison's Josh Vos carried the ball six times for one hundred fifty yards and three touchdowns while Andy Shaver added eighty nine yards and a score. Vos' 3 scores give him thirteen for the year. The Mustangs amassed 538 total yards while holding the Falcon's to 207.
