“Your Table is Ready...Your Mint is on the Pillow” Expo

The Freeport/Stephenson County Visitors Center opened a new Expo called “Your Table is Ready...Your Mint is on the Pillow”, features displays from local lodging facilities and restaurants. Hotels, a bed and breakfast, camping and numerous restaurants are included in the exhibit. The Expo will be the Center’s featured exhibit through September 6. The Visitors Center, located at 4596 US Highway 20 east of Freeport, is open daily from 8 am to 8 pm. Funded by private donations, the center is designed to promote economic growth in Freeport and Stephenson County. Further information may be obtained by contacting the Visitors Center at 233-1357.

HRRV creates a support group

Tour of ‘Reagan Country’

The 100th anniversary of the birth of President Ronald Reagan will be commemorated with an ISHS motor-coach tour of “Reagan Country” this fall, Friday and Saturday, October 8-9, 2010. Tour destinations include sites associated with the Black Hawk War and Abraham Lincoln; the John Deere Interpretive Center at Grand Detour; Dixon and the Rock River Valley; the Laredo Taft monument to Native Americans in Oregon; and more. Celebrate the Journey of Recovery

Recovery is more about a personal journey and less about a final destination. Each milestone along the way is cause for celebration. The Recovery Celebration will be held Thursday September 2, 2010 on the grounds of Sinnissippi Centers’ Dixon office (325 Illinois Route 2) from 6:30 pm to 8:30pm. Min’s Mississippi Walk/Run

The sixteenth annual Min’s Mississippi Walk/Run will be held on Saturday, September 4th in Thomson, IL. The four mile event starts at 8:00 a.m. on the west end of Main Street, past the Thomson causeway campground. There will be two water stops on the course and one water stop at the finish. Lena’s Historical Society is one of only sic Illinois communities chosen to host “New Harmonies, Celebrating Roots of American Music,” an exhibit of root music that emerged from the blues, country, western, folk and gospel. Kids Fishing Day

Local area youth, ages 5-12, are encouraged to pre-register now for Kids Fishing Day at the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge. A youth fishing clinic will be held at Frog Pond on September 11, 2010 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Children 6 and under must be accompanied by a parent or guardian during the day. Gravel Pit School Reunion

An all-school reunion is being planned for students who attended Gravel Pit School, a one-room country school north of Forreston, Illinois. The reunion will be held Sunday, September 12, 2010, at the Forreston Village Park in Forreston. All former students, their spouses, families, parents and teachers are invited to attend. At 12:30 p.m., there will be registration followed by a potluck dinner. Following the meal, we will have a time of reminiscing. Carroll County Retired Teachers

Retired educators from Carroll County will hold their first meeting of the 2010 - 2011 year. This meeting will be held on September 14, 2010 at Oakville County Club, Mt. Carroll, IL at noon. A meal will be served prior to a program using the cartoon character Maxine. Betty Clemtz and Pam Erby will give a skit on Maxine, the school teacher. Dues will be collected as well as the first opportunity to pay Life Memberships for the local organization at $200.00. Reservations should be made to a local director by Sept. 7th. A short business meeting will close the activities for the day.
