Stockton Squeaks Out Road Win

By Craig Lang

Prairie Advocate Sports

The Stockton Blackhawks eked out a narrow 42-34 road win in Pearl City on Tuesday night. The Wolves opened the game strong, running off six quick points, but, Stockton countered by going on a twenty three to three run of their own to open up a fourteen point lead. Stockton also used a zone defense, forcing the Wolves to take higher risk shots from the outside. The Wolves were only able to know down one shot from behind the arc and that enabled the Blackhawks to take command of the contest. Stockton led twenty five to seventeen at the half and opened up their lead to a dozen at the end of three quarters thirty two to twenty. The Wolves managed to take the advantage in the fourth quarter, outscoring Stockton fourteen to ten but it was too late to make up the difference. Haley Magee led the Blackhawk scorers with fourteen and teammates Kalli Schamberger and Keeley Schulz added twelve and ten points respectively. Pearl City’s Kelsie Kluck led the Wolves pouring in nineteen points.

A large crowd came to witness some great basketball on Saturday at the West Carroll Middle Scholl in Mt. Carroll. The games began at ten in the morning and ran all day featuring fourteen teams, four girls and ten boys teams from Illinois, Iowa and Indiana.

The day began with the West Carroll girls taking on the River Queens from Clinton, Iowa. Although Clinton had been on a three game losing streak they arrived in Mt. Carroll ready to play, dismantling the West Carroll team 49-21.

The next game on the days schedule featured the Milledgeville Missles boys against the LaMoille Lions. The Missiles started the game in high gear taking first and second quarter leads. They kept the pressure on LaMoille in the second half, outscoring their opponents twenty eight to sixteen to take the 58-44 win.

The third game of the day saw the Forreston Cardinals taking on the Clinton River Kings. Clinton came into the game ranked number nine in the 4A ranking for Iowa schools and with a record of 9-2. They showed the fans why they deserved that ranking with a thirteen point 61-48 victory over the Cardinals.

The days fourth game saw the Lady Knights from Davenport Assumption taking on the Eagles from Bowman Academy. The Lady Knights came out on fire and made quick work of the Eagles, rolling to the 88-43 win.

The next game was between the Challengers from Chicago Bloom and the Cougars of Cedar Rapids Kennedy. This was probably the most exciting game of the day as three overtimes had to be played to decide a winner. Bloom Township eventually prevailed in the contest, holding off the Cougars 54-53.

The days sixth game featured two of the top teams to be invited to the Shootout, the Bettendorf Bulldogs and the Eagles from Bowman Academy. The Bulldogs are ranked #11 in 4A in Iowa and the Eagles are ranked #1 in Class 1A in Indiana. The game proved it was worthy of living up to the hype with Bowman taking the twenty two point 84-62 win.

The final game on the days schedule featured the host West Carroll Thunder taking on the Challengers from Chicago Carver. The Thunder played a good game and eventually fell to the Challengers by nine 75-66. A great day of basketball was complete and my congratulations go out to the staff at West Carroll for hosting another great event. I’m already looking forward the fourth annual Shootout!
