Schools in the pioneer time were an iffy proposition. You read about the log ones, those held in the homes or meeting house with a single teacher, sixteen years old. There was no place to go but up. But that didn’t happen for twenty-thirty years, not as fast as you might suppose. Not until the 1850’s did the situation begin to improve. People were busy taming the frontier, building railroads, enlarging cities. With determination and perseverance of some, schools went forward.

Hammer’s Welcome New Son

Joe and Teresa Hammer of Shannon are proud parents of a new son, Brayden Joseph, born on Tuesday, September 27, 2011 at the Monroe Clinic Hospital in Monroe, WI. Grandparents are Todd and Anne Kampmeier of Albuquerque, New Mexico and Joe and Kristi Hammer of Shannon, IL.

Miller Competes in Miss Illinois USA

Lindsay LaRae Miller, 19, of Lanark will compete for the title of Miss Illinois USA 2012 on November 18-20, 2011 at the Hyatt Regency McCormick Place in Chicago, IL. Miss Miller is the daughter of Darren Folk and Amy Folk. She attends Highland Community College and is working towards a degree in the Medical Field. her sponsors for the pageant are local businesses, family and friends. The Miss Illinois Teen USA and Miss Illinois USA pageants are the Official Preliminaries to the Miss Teen USa, Miss USA and Miss Universer pageants and are Donald J. Trump and NBC Universal Inc. joint venture. The Miss Illinois USA competition offers area young women a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to advance their personal, professional and humanitarian goals. The young woman chosen as Miss Illinois USA 2012 will go on to represent the state of Illinois in the 2012 Miss USA pageant as seen live on NBC television, one of the most anticipated television events of the year.
