Elite 8 for Forreston

Norsemen End Cardinals Season

By Craig Lang

Prairie Advocate Sports Writer

A slow first quarter proved to be the downfall for the Forreston Cardinals at the DeKalb Super Sectional game on Tuesday evening. Newark’s Brett Anderson hit a couple key three pointers early in the contest to lead the Norsemen to the 60-47 win, advancing them to Peoria and the Class 1A State Final tournament.

The trip to Carver Arena is the first in Newark’s history. Newark fell in last year’s Super Sectional contest to the Eastland Cougars, who went on to finish fourth in the state.

Newark jumped off to a fast start, taking a 24-7 first quarter lead. The Norsemen were torching the nets throughout the game, shooting 61% from the field and 60% from behind the three point line. The Cardinals shot 40% from the field and a mere twenty five per cent from behind the arc. The Cardinals outscored the Norsemen thirteen to nine in the second quarter but still trailed Newark 33-20.

The Norsemen opened up the lead to as much as seventeen points early in the third period, but Forreston went on a twelve to two run to cut the lead to seven points going into the final quarter.

The Cardinals were able to cut that lead to six with about three minutes left but could get no closer as Newark outscored Forreston nineteen to thirteen in the final period.

Brett Anderson led Newark with twenty two points and Kyle Anderson added seventeen. The Cardinals were led by Colton Scott’s sixteen points with teammate Tanner Bronkema adding a dozen. The victory improves the Norsemen’s record to 31-1 while Forreston closes out their season with a record of 25-6.

Newark eventually defeated Deer Creek-Mackinaw and Winchester to claim the State 1A Championship.
