Eastland Sweeps Stockton

Behind the nineteen strikeout performance of Lady Cougar starting pitcher Marissa Harris, Eastland scored four runs in the second and third innings and held off the Lady Blackhawks in game one in Lanark on Monday 4-3. Stockton managed to put three unearned runs on the board in the top of the sixth inning to avoid the shut out on a pair of Lady Cougar fielding errors. At the plate, Heather Strong led the Eastland squad going three for three with a double and two runs batted in and teammate Delanie Giedd went two for three. Harris limited Stockton to just those three runs on four hits while walking four Lady Blackhawk batters.

The second game saw the Lady Cougars pound out a dozen hits and starting pitcher Haley Miller limited Stockton to no runs on five hits enroute to the 11-0 shut out win. The Lady Cougars bats were clicking as Taylor Ruter and Ashley Larak both went three for four at the plate with teammate Delanie Giedd going three for five with a double and four runs batted in. Larak and Miller both had a pair of runs batted in to aid the Eastland offense.

Lady Cougars Rout Stockton

Eastland put two runs on the scoreboard in the top half of the first inning and that would prove to be plenty as Eastland’s offense was hitting on all cylinders in the 13-1 victory over Stockton on Tuesday afternoon at Galena. Starting Eastland pitcher Marissa Harris held the Stockton hitters in check, limiting Stockton to a single first inning run on two hits and striking out seven.

Eastland pounded out fifteen hits in the game, led by Delanie Giedd and Taylor Ruter who both were three for four at the plate. Lady Cougar’s Ashley Larak and Haley Miller had doubles while Giedd and Ashley Nepean contributed to the offensive output with triples. Giedd also had three runs batted in. The win keeps the Lady Cougars perfect in the NUIC with a record of seven wins against no losses and 21-7 overall.

Le-Win Takes A Pair From Pearl City

Pearl City traveled to Lena on Tuesday and came away with a pair of losses after dropping both games of a doubleheader. The Lady Wolves jumped out to a two to nothing lead in game one before Le-Win came back with three runs in the bottom of the third and the Lady Panthers held on to claim the 3-2 victory. Le-Win scored their three runs on only two hits off Pearl City losing pitcher Taylor Runkle. Logan Skeel was two for three at the plate in game one with a run scored.

Game two saw Le-Win jump out to an early lead before the Lady Wolves came back to make the game interesting. The Lady Panthers took a 5-0 lead into the bottom half of the second inning before Pearl City came up with a single run in the bottom half. Le-Win added a pair of runs in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings while Pearl City added two runs in the fourth and another pair in the fifth with a single run scored in the sixth. Both teams hammered out thirteen hits in game two with Morgan Curry leading the way for Pearl City with three singles. Teammates Jenna Canon, Logan Skeel and Taylor Runkle all had a pair of hits.

West Carroll Takes Two From East Dubuque

The Lady Thunder came up big against East Dubuque in Thomson on Monday, putting up 7-2 and 11-2 wins over the Lady Warriors. Game one saw starting pitcher Allison Thulen improve her record to three wins against one loss. She pitched all seven innings, walking three and striking out six East Dubuque batters. Lady Thunder players Sophi Morhardt and Thulen contributed with their bats, each having a two base hit. Ieshia Larson added a double and triple for West Carroll’s offense. West Carroll head coach Don Mathey said, “We did a very good job of executing offensively tonight. Allison pitched very well and we played good defense behind her.”

The second game saw East Dubuque jump out to a two to nothing lead after three innings before the Lady Thunder came back with eleven unanswered runs to break the game open. Lady Thunder pitcher Kim Durward went the distance, giving up four hits while walking six and striking out four. Katy Cook went two for three at the plate with teammates Taylor Cole and Kaiti Mathey both going two for five. Coach Mathey commented, “ Dana McCombie finally broke this game open with her three run double to the fence against a twenty five mile per hour wind. Again, another solid effort by our team on senior night in which every senior started and played in this game.”

Pearl City Edges Dakota

The Lady Wolves scored 4 fourth inning runs and held off the Dakota squad to take the 4-3 win on Monday afternoon. Taylor Runkle was the winning pitcher for Pearl City, going all seven innings and allowing four hits while walking five and striking out three. Runkle also aided her own cause with her bat, going one for three with a run scored and two runs batted in.

Milledgeville Wins A Thriller

The West Carroll Lady Thunder appeared to have a close game going in their favor on Thursday in Milledgeville. They held a two to one lead going into the bottom of the seventh inning despite being out hit by the Lady Missiles.

Starting Milledgeville pitcher Emily Bush blasted a one out, walk-off, two run home run to give the Lady Missiles the 3-2 come from behind win.

Both teams got on the scoreboard early, with each team scoring a first inning run. The game remained tied until the Lady Thunder jumped on top two to one with a single fourth inning run. Both teams put up zeros in both the fifth and sixth innings. Bush and her West Carroll opponent Kim Durward pitched complete games. Emily gave up four hits while walking two and striking out nine West Carroll hitters. Durward surrendered nine hits while walking none and striking out one. The win improves the Lady Missiles record to 19-7 overall.

Lady Cougars Edge Fulton

Eastland made the most of their three hits on Friday in Fulton as they edged the Lady Steamers 4-3. Eastland scored three runs in the top of the opening inning and added another single run in the top of the fifth. Fulton scored single runs in the second, fifth and sixth innings to make the contest close.

Eastland Starting pitcher Haley Miller went all seven innings, giving up three runs (one earned) on six hits while walking one and striking out three Lady Steamer batters. Taylor Ruter and Hannah Shellhause hit doubles for Eastland who improves their record to twenty two wins against only seven losses while remaining perfect in the conference with a 14-0 record.

Cougars Roll Over Wolves

Eastland pounded out seventeen hits and limited Pearl City to a pair of seventh inning runs enroute to the 13-2 win in Pearl City on Tuesday afternoon. The Cougars hammered out seven extra base hits including a pair of home runs from Tyler Giedd and a homer from Cougar starting pitcher Jordan Blair to take the easy victory. The Wolves Nathan Falk took the loss on the mound for Pearl City. Despite only leading three to nothing going into the fourth, Eastland erupted for ten more runs over the next four innings to put the contest out of reach.

West Carroll Loses Two At Home

Visiting East Dubuque put up five unearned first inning runs and held off the Thunder in seven to take the 12-11 first game victory. The first game was a continuation game that was originally scheduled for April 23rd. West Carroll used three different pitchers in game one with each going two innings. Starter Tyler Brashaw gave up five unearned runs on three hits and relievers Tyler Jones and Joey Sullivan gave up the remaining seven runs. On offense, West Carroll was paced by Matt LaShelle who had a base hit and a two run home run, Tyler Jones who had a single and double and Evan Williams with two singles.

In the second game, East Dubuque jumped on starter Tyler Brashaw for five runs on seven hits in four innings to take the 10-3 victory. Joey Sullivan had three base hits for the Thunder in the second game.

Thunder coach Brian Kamper said of game one, “We gave up an unearned run in the sixth and it really hurt us. This game was continued from April 23rd and we gave up five unearned runs to start the game then.” Of the second game he said, “We left eleven runners on base. We gave them four runs in the first and couldn’t dig out of the hole. Our long stretch of games finally caught up with us.”

Forreston/Polo Wins Big Over Missiles

Forreston/Polo scored thirteen runs in the final two innings to break open the game and took the 15-4 victory over Milledgeville on Wednesday at MHS. The Forreston/Polo squad capitalized on seven extra base hits and three Milledgeville errors to run away from the Missiles in the late innings.

Starting pitcher Robert Cornelius went the distance to get the win for Forreston/Polo, giving up all four runs on six hits while walking four and striking out ten Milledgeville hitters. Garrett Vietmeier was three for four at the plate with three runs scored, a home run and two runs batted in. Shortstop Michael Osterloo was also three for four with the bat, scoring three runs with a double, home run and two RBI’s. The Missiles Dennis Layman took the pitching loss, going four and a third innings and giving up nine runs on nine hits while walking four and striking out two.

Cougars Double Up On Thunder

The Eastland Cougars and West Carroll Thunder traveled to Clinton, Iowa on Thursday for a game played at Alliant Energy Field, the home of the Clinton Lumberkings. The game began close as both starting pitchers found their grooves early on.

Eastland was able to break onto the scoreboard first with two runs in the bottom of the opening inning. The Thunder countered with a pair of runs in the top of the third but Eastland responded in the bottom of the inning with a single run to take the three to two lead. West Carroll came right back with a run in the top of the fourth to knot the game at three apiece.

The Cougars exploded for five runs in the bottom half of the fifth inning and Cougar starter Tyler Giedd was able to hold the Thunder at bay for the rest of the way. The Thunder responded with one more run in the top of the seventh but just couldn’t manage to get any closer. Giedd went the distance giving up all four runs on four hits. The Thunder’s Matt LaShelle also pitched a complete game, giving up a dozen hits with three walks and nine Cougars batters fanned.

Thunder head coach Brian Kamper commented, “Eastland is a very good ball club. All the credit goes to the, We played well, they just hit the ball better than us. We need to find our bats before regionals.”

Cardinals Blank Milledgeville

The Missiles traveled to Prophetstown on Thursday to face Erie/P’town and came up empty as the Cardinals rolled to the 19-0 win. Two Cardinal pitchers limited Milledgeville to a pair of fourth inning singles by Kyle Groen and Dean Hollowell and pounded Missile pitching for fifteen hits. E/P got on the board first putting up four first inning runs. The Cardinals exploded for a dozen second inning runs on six hits and were aided by three Milledgeville miscues in the field. The Cardinals added three more runs in the final two innings off Missile reliever Zach Herin.

Starter Brandon Feltenz gave up sixteen runs on nine hits in an inning and two thirds of work. Cardinal starter Sawyer Kuepker went three innings allowing no hits while walking none and striking out five Missile hitters. He was relieved in the fourth by Dominic Burke who allowed the two Milledgeville base hits.

Warren/Stockton Score Big On West Carroll

The Thunder jumped out to an early lead but couldn’t hold on as Warren/Stockton piled on the runs to take the 13-5 win in Thomson on Saturday. West Carroll led four to three after three innings of play but Warren/Stockton came back with six fourth inning runs and two runs in the fifth and sixth innings to take control of the contest. West Carroll committed five fielding errors to aid Warren/Stockton. The Thunder’s Tyler Jones took the pitching loss in relief of starter Evan Williams who pitched two and a third. Both teams pounded out ten hits in the game, with both Williams and Trey Enloe going deep for the Thunder.

West Carroll head coach Kamper said of his teams performance, “We have lost our mental toughness. If we can’t find it before regionals, it will be one and done.”

Milledgeville/Eastland’s Brittny Olson ran away from the field on Monday in Milledgeville. Olson finished first in four events and led the way for the Milledgeville/Eastland girl’s track team to come away with first place overall. Olson took first place honors in the long jump (17’ 2”), the 100-meter dash (12.68), the 200-meter dash (26.24) and the 400-meter dash (1:03.22).

The high jump was won by Eryn Johnson of Dakota with Milledgeville/Eastland’s Miranda Grisham finishing third and West Carroll’s Kaylee Vos finishing fourth. Pearl City’s Kelsie Kluck finished fifth in the long jump behind Olson. In the triple jump Milledgeville/Eastland’s Katie Hutchinson finished third with Vos finishing fifth. The 3200-meter relay had the West Carroll team of Lindsay Dauphin, Maria Timm, Liz Conroy & Trelawney Biasden finishing third. The Milledgeville/Eastland relay team took fourth in the 400-meter relay. Milledgeville/Eastland’s Kayla Barnes took first place in the 3200 meter run with a time of 13:19.01. The 100-meter hurdles were won by Galena/River Ridge/East Dubuque’s Anna Green with Kim Johnson and Peyton Sturtevant of Milledgeville/Eastland finishing second and third. The 100-meter dash had West Carroll’s Aliesha Handel finishing second behind Olson with a time of 12.86.

The Milledgeville/Eastland squad also finished second in the 800-meter relay behind Galena/River Ridge/East Dubuque. The 300-meter low hurdles had Milledgeville/Eastland’s Kim Johnson and Peyton Sturtevant finishing second and fourth. Pearl City’s Kayla Albrecht took the top spot in the 1600-meter run with Kayla Barnes of Milledgeville/Eastland finishing second. The 1600-meter relay team from Milledgeville/Eastland placed second behind Le-Win.

Hasken Signs With Ashford

Katelyn Hasken from Eastland High School has signed a letter of intent to attend Ashford University and play volleyball next fall. Head Volleyball Coach Micah Cewe of Ashford was at the Eastland High School Media Center on Friday, May 13th to formalize Katelyn’s decision.

Cewe prepares to enter his seventh year as head coach of the Ashford University volleyball team and is excited to have Katelyn join the Saints. The Ashford University Saints compete in the Midwest Collegiate Conference.

 

 

 

 

 

Spring Sports Awards Night

West Carroll High School will host the spring sports awards night on Tuesday, May 24th at West Carroll High School. The purpose of this event is to honor all spring sports participants. The baseball, softball and track teams will conduct their award ceremonies starting at 7 p.m.
