Mother Nature’s clock is accurately ticking, however, with the correct times being spelled out in wildflowers emerging. Wild Phlox are flocking. Spring beauties have sprung. Rue Anemone rue the cold mornings. Wildflowers go by their strict time clock.

West Carroll Slips By Comets

By Craig Lang

Prairie Advocate Sports

A big sixth inning propelled the Thunder past Sterling Newman 7-4 at the Oregon regional. The game was knotted at three to three after five innings before West Carroll broke through to put some distance between themselves and the Comets. Newman came back with a run in the bottom of the sixth but could not manage to get the score any closer. West Carroll’s Chelsey Sipe went three for three at the plate with a pair of doubles while Tygan Cole went three for four with a double. The Thunder’s Kim Durward picked up the pitching win going three and a third innings and giving up three runs on four hits. Thinder head coach Don Mathey commented, “A great job of executing offensively with buntng and moving our runners along. Defensively it was another story. We worked ourselves out of a couple of jams and live to see another game. Both pitchers did their jobs and we came through with clutch hits.”

Missiles Crush Thunder

By Craig Lang

Prairie Advocate Sports

Milledgeville/Polo put runs on the scoreboard in every inning and cruised to the easy 11-1 victory over West Carroll in the Oregon regional semi final game. Keali Engelkens again hurled a gem, pitching a three hitter and helping herself with the bat, getting three hits and three rbl’s. Keali was helped on offense by teammates Andrea Herin who had a double, triple and three runs batted in, Alexis DawTyne with a single, two doubles and three rbi’s and Emily Bush and Katelyn Grobe with a run batted in each. The win improves M/P’s record to 23-3 and advances them to the Oregon regional final to face the Rock Falls Rockets. Thunder coach Mathey said after the game, “M/P’s hitting was outstanding tonight. We just could not get them out. They have a real solid ball club that is really well coached. Last time we faced them we struck out thirteen times and this game only five. We did a much better job putting the bat on the ball as a team. I wish M/P the best of luck in the postseason. They will be tough to beat.”

Thunder Eliminated By Pec/Durand

By Craig Lang

Prairie Advocate Sports

Pec/Durand got a great performance out of pitcher Mike Johnson, who limited the Thunder to four hits as Pecatonica/Durand edged West Carroll 4-3 to win the West Carroll regional championship. The Thunder took the early lead scoring a single run in the top of the second. Pec/Durand came back to knot the score at one in the bottom of the frame. West Carroll plated a pair in the top of the third and the Indians came back to put up three runs of their own. The pitchers then took over and it was all goose eggs from that point on. Tyler Brashaw took the pitching loss for the Thunder going two and two thirds giving up all four runs on four hits. Trey Enloe had two of West Carroll’s four hits with a pair of doubles. Thunder coach Kamper said, “It was a great regional championship game. Both teams came to play and Pec earned their victory. Pec’s pitcher had a real nice curveball and we have struggled witht that pitch all season and it came back to bite us in a big game. I am real proud of my boys, nine of the boys that played today will be back for West Carroll next year. Our team is truly going to miss our three seniors and I wish them all the best, Adam Ferguson, Joe Dykstra and Tripper Carey.”

Thunder catcher Joey Sullivan (13) blocks the plate and tags out Pecatonica’s Ian Stemper in the top of the 6th inning, keeping West Carroll within one run. Sullivan had another great defensive play at the plate in the top of the 7th, but a Thunder 2-out rally in the final frame fell short. Pec took the West Carroll Regional by a score of 4-3.)
