HS Varsity Football Preseason Outlook

The Polo Marcos begin the 2011 season after going 4-5 in the Northwest Upstate Illini Upstate Division last year. The Marcos will play in the Northwest Division this season after the IHSA realignment of the divisions. New head coach Andrew Hofer takes over at the helm, succeeding Ted Alston. Coach Hofer was an assistant defensive coach at Deer Creek-Mackinaw in 2010.

The Marcos will have returning players, seniors Michael Geary (QB/DB), Brandon Imel (OL/DL), Chad Stauffer (OL/LB), Kyle Deets (OL/DL), Riley Gober (OL/DL) and Spencer Frano (WR/DB). Juniors Zach Hagemann (RB/LB) and Austin Reeder (QB/DB). Key newcomers include, juniors Xavier Calderon (OL/DL), ohn Hanlon (OL/LB), Alex Hoak (OL/DL) and Justin Drolema (OL/DL). Sophomores Ethan Ditzler (WR/DB and Brian Cavanaugh (WR/DB) also look to contribute some quality minutes to Coach Hofer’s plans.

When asked what he thought his team’s strength’s would be, Coach Hofer replied, “We will be quick and athletic. This will benefit us as we lack size up front. We are looking to play better defensively this year, especially against the run.” What are the goals for this year’s Polo Marcos squad? “First of all, it is our goal to return to the playoffs,” Hofer said, “We are young and inexperienced, but with continuing improvement from the younger guys, we hope that we can get back in. We would also like to have a 1,00 yard rusher this upcoming season. The keys to us achieving these goals is how we develop throughout the season. Our guys really need to buy in to our program as we will be running a new offensive and defensive system.”

Boilermakers

Head coach Chris Waca begins his third year at the helm of the Kewanee Boilermakers, who will compete in the Big Rivers Conference for their second year after joining the conference coming from the NCIC Lincoln Conference in 2009.The Boilermakers finished the 2010 season at 4-5, tied with the Fulton Steamers, in a very tough, competitive conference that includes the likes of the Morrison Mustangs and the Sterling Newman Comets.

Kewanee will have sixteen returning players and will return nine to the starting lineup. Returning players include 6’1”, 175 lb. senior QB Jake Scott who tossed the football for 1088 yards and 9 TD’s. Also returning is 5’9”, 165 lb. running back Dontae Pryor who ran the football for 1161 yards and 13 touchdowns. 5’8”, 185 lb. senior Alphonso Inocencio joins Pryor in the backfield. He rushed for 263 yards in the 2010 season. Senior wide receivers Alfaye Taylor and Ryan Matuszyk will hook up with Scott to form a formidable offensive setting. The 6’3”, 175 lb. Taylor amassed 228 receiving yards last year while the 5’10”, 175 lb. Matuszyk had 152 yards receiving and another 387 yards rushing the football. The Boilermakers also have some size on their line, with 6’3”, 240 lb. senior Cal Breedlove, 6’4”, 245 lb. senior Glenn Wells, 6’3”, 285 lb. senior Jake Jennings and 6’, 235 lb. senior Ben Pickering anchoring the line. Breedlove was a second team All Big Rivers Conference tackle in 2010, Pickering second team center and Wells an Honorable Mention All Big Rivers Conference tackle.

Coach Waca sees the Boilermakers strengths as team speed, experience and size. Their weakness is consistency and their goals are to “find themselves” early through discipline and consistency. Kewanee starts their season on the road, taking on Peru St. Bede in their first contest on August 26th.

Riverdale Rams

The Riverdale Rams and new head coach Nick Schroder enter the 2011 season with high hopes after finishing the 2010 campaign at 1-8 and in seventh place in the Big Rivers Conference. “The kids have really bought into committing themselves in the summer in order to work like a championship caliber program,” said first year coach Schroder.

He looks for big things from senior QB Chuck Rocker, running backs Wes DeClercq, Payton Nimrick and Decker Logan, wide receivers Dalton Klavon and Caleb Maraden as well as offensive linemen Austin Ortiz, Ean Bush, Steve Darr, Mitch Keppy, TJ Nitz and Drew Beale. Joining the mix will be junior quarterback Dalton Peterson, running backs TJ Lowe and Zach Mikles and linemen Peter Blick, Logan Sherman, Bryce Pridemore, Jeremy Vols and Ricky Pollock as well as sophomores Terry White and Brandon Mizlo.

”Riverdale football has to learn how to stay competitive throughout the entire game and learn how to finish,” Coach Schroder said when asked where the Rams need to improve. “They lost four games last year by a touchdown or less which tells out staff we need to focus on finishing everything we do.” Coach Schroder continued, “Our long term goal is to still be playing come week ten and upholding the rich tradition of Big Rivers football by making a long playoff run, but we can’t achieve that without our short term goals which is going 1-0 against our opponent each week.” When asked what the keys are to achieving those goals, he replied, “The key for us going 1-0 each week is to worry about us. It is such an established conference with powerhouse teams that we don’t have to worry about the teams we play three weeks down the road because they aren’t changing. Teams in this conference have done what they do for 40 years. That allows us to worry about our program, our scheme and where we can put our kids in order to give us the best chance of going 1-0 on any given week.”
